The Art of Company Policies

Implementing policies is a tricky business for many companies. There are all kinds of policies for different departments and scenarios. One does not implement a policy just for the sake of having one. The use of policies is to help achieve the goals and objectives that the company sets out to accomplish.

Standard policies are enforced to help achieve the objectives of the company. They are long term and are used in order to guide the company. Policies are also guidelines for employees to follow on what and what not to do. There must be standard policies for every company in order to function properly.

New policies are established as the company changes or needs improvement. They are sometimes implemented as the goals of the company are changing as a result of the competition or situation. This usually occurs as the company starts to expand or shrink. They are enforced as the company starts to head to a different direction. When a policy is doing poorly or there is a lack, a new policy emerges.

Situational policies are created for the situation at hand. The use of these situational policies usually only occurs when there is a crisis. Most of these situational policies are very strict in order to get through the dark times ahead. When a dire situation occurs, a policy is strengthened to become a situational policy (or a new one is implemented). The use of situational policies (very strict) will affect morale and stresses out the workforce. When the crisis is gone, the policy must be lifted or else the workforce will burn out.

Try to use your policies effectively. Know when to enforce new policies and when to lift them. As the policy gets stricter so does the stress of the employees. Issuing policies is not an easy task and requires careful consideration.

the difficult part in creating the policy or guidelines is to make it comprehensive enough to cover all that needs to be covered, but at the same time short enough for people to actually remember what is there …

Policies has to be short, simple and clear. All policies should be like that.

I agree with David about the simplicity and clarity of policies. Want to see an example of how policies should be? check James Brausch’s intern program at jamesbrausch.com; I’m sure you’ll agree with me.
