Marketing during Ancient China

Some people might be wondering if there was any marketing on products and services during ancient China. The answer is yes, but they did not have the technology we enjoyed so it was limited. Most of the marketing methods used during ancient times are still being used today so it might be worthwhile to read and compare it with today’s methods.

During ancient times in China, soldiers would be carrying banners like you see with samurai. Although unverified, there’s likelihood that people in those days would use banners to advertise their profession or products and services. I can’t imagine anyone doing it today to promote themselves but it would be fun to watch businessmen with banners on their back to market themselves in this day and age.

Flags in ancient China represent the different factions during the warring period. However, it was also used for promotional purposes as well. People would use a flag and write down their advertisement (mostly words) and walk around with it to promote their products and services. Bulletin board was also used for advertising for businesses but for a long time it was reserved for kings and government officials only for breaking news. Fliers were also common as well when paper became widespread later after the 3rd century in China.

So what works in ancient China is still working today. I seen flags with pictures of products and services offered, bulletin boards crammed with advertisements and fliers going around everywhere. If I were a tourist guide, I would definitely carry a banner on my back so I don’t have to hold up a flag for tourists to follow my lead.
