Hmm... I'd rather vote for being different and/or remarkable.

My opinion, being first in today's world is not that easy anymore, nor do I find is it necessary in order to succeed big time.

What is necessary though, as I find, is to be different and perhaps better. And when you do remarkable things, word of mouth does its wonders.

Two examples are Nike and Nokia. Both were not the first, yet they are leaders in their field and succeed big time.

I tell students that get started online to be either different, better, or remarkable (or all three, if possible). That way, they immediately see a light at the end of the tunnel. They understand that they don't need to re-invent the wheel--or invent anything--in order to build a thriving online business.

On the other hand, when you want to be the first you better be born as a good architect, leader, and/or pioneer in order to construct a path for others to follow you. (Untapped markets are tough to master.)

I have to agree, it's only worth being first if you don't blow all your budget getting there, otherwise the second or third business will get the glory...

I am first here :-)

Have to agree with the post with one tiny little remark - Being first that people know about.

There are many people who are first in coming up with some new product or idea, but have no channels or no money to let the world know about that. So often the people we see as those who were first are only the seconds or thirds ... Very frustrating for the "first" seeing his idea being made big but someone else ...
